about

“This is just a little Samba, built upon a single note, other notes are bound to follow but the root is still that note...”

This playful "Samba de Uma Nota Só" (One Note Samba) is one of my favourite tunes by Antônio Carlos Jobim. The Portuguese lyrics were penned by Newton Mendonça and the English ones were written by Jobim himself. The song title refers to the main melody line, which at first consists of a long series of notes of a single tone played in a bossa nova rhythm.

This well-known song first reached a wide audience on the Grammy-winning bossa nova LP Jazz Samba (Getz/Byrd/Jobim), which reached the number one spot on the Billboard 200 in 1963.

The approach to this Jobim classic is anything but traditional bossa nova: It starts off with a very funky double bass line over a syncopated, New Orleans style drum pattern, with two steel string guitars playing pads. When the verse starts this same musical direction continues.

The vocal form stays true to the original song but the trumpet solo section deviates from that form harmonically and structurally. The overall effect of the track is more of a Nu-jazz feel.
