Come Closer

from Ipanema Lounge by Frances Livings

/

about

“Come Closer is like seeing an award winning art film, only in a musical form.” ~ Greg Porée

This original, penned by Frances and the German bassist and songwriter Volker Schwanke, captures hauntingly, the intensity of longing and never attaining. From the vocals to the instrumentalists, this intense topic is beautifully captured. With 5:04 minutes, it is the longest song on the album and has an almost cinematic character.

Dynamically the range is broad. The beginning is dark and moody, which transitions into a chorus that is tonally dissonant and almost Middle Eastern. The percussion and bass underpinnings are in a contemporary, sultry and passionate Nu Jazz style. From there, going into a double time, the track gets progressively funky and driving. Paul Cartwright, one of the four guest soloists on the album, added an imaginative and atmospheric violin solo to this section. After that, Frances’ vocal brings us back down to the completion of the story.

lyrics

COME CLOSER

Many nights, when the candles
have burned down low
and my dreams start to mingle
with the cushions and flow
to a longing for you – to hold me close

Is there no other destination
just this - tied up desperation
this longing for you – to hold me close

So close, so close, so close, so come closer
So close, so close, so close, so come closer
So close, so close, so close, come closer to me now

Days have passed of being here on my own
of hearing my own paces, while I endlessly roam
flicking through images imprinted in my mind
gazing into the blue – with this picture of you
gazing into the blue – with this picture of you

So close, so close, so close, so come closer
So close, so close, so close, so come closer
So close, so close, so close, come closer to me now

Is there no cure to this pain
that you may never again – come closer
just this - tied up desperation
just this – longing, longing destination
this longing for you – to come closer to me now

Come closer, come closer to me now …..
